How to plan a Boho Style Birthday Party!

Get inspired to plan your kid's party. In this blog post I'll share a little bit of Ayla's special day, tips & tricks to level up the photography and decor.

As a photographer I love to be completely involved with the planning process of the sessions or events that is when the creativity comes to live. Putting all ideas together to plan a birthday party, for example, requires organization and hands on. The Boho Style is proven a timeless trend, so let's dive in!

The backyard boho theme

The Boho style is a fun mixture of colors, texture, layers and patterns that all together build a casual stylish look. Andriele, Ayla's mom, has always loved the concept and every time she hires me for family pictures I expect the cutest details.

The backyard birthday party was taken on a beautiful fall-y day at sunset in Richmond, Virginia. I couldn't be happier with this combo!

Cannot get enough of the color palette, the textures and favors. That's a bohemian dream!

Planning on Pinterest

The best way I found to get inspired is through Pinterest that is where I create my client's photography boards to build the sessions. To plan a party is not any different: start by selecting the images that most give you joy as far as style, color and put them all in the same board.

Color palette

When picking the color palette for your boho party the tip is to choose a neutral base color and then mix with bold saturated palettes. Let's say, you can opt for the earth tones; pink, blues and neutrals; pink and greens with gold touch; blues and neutrals. Then you add smooth and rough textures, chunky and refined, hard and soft. Materials as jute, cane, natural wood, leather and chunky knits are a great deal to level up the decor.

Favors: the special guests

Photographing Ayla's birthday party was a heaven for me. That was because every detail counted and even the favors were minimalistic and perfectly displayed to make the pictures even prettier.

When I get to an event, first thing I do is to get the zoom in images then zooming out to the complete scenario. This way, when the clients see the final album, the story is being told in a sequence of memories that gives that slow motion feeling - kind of reliving the moments.

That's why the favors are SO important: not only for creating a photography storytelling but to create the birthday party experience the guests will always remember.

DIY or hire the best local!

The planning and execution process doesn't have to be overwhelming. Ayla's birthday, for example, was a result of great people working together. Search for local vendors that have experience on the style you have in mind and take a look at their work. As a photographer I always connect with my clients by my style and vision, same thing applies to all the other people you will hire to make your dream come true. Also, never forget: these moments are gold!

Always happy to connect and recommend the best in Richmond, VA:
