Capturing the essence of a family’s bond amidst the stunning backdrop of Hampton’s beautiful beaches is a truly rewarding experience. The Lisboas were nothing but fun and joyful to photograph, and I just love everything about their session. The afternoon was cloudy and a bit dark, but you can’t tell from the photos, right?
Then, the sunset hour was absolutely breathtaking. We scouted two different locations and outfits to get the most out of the session, and I couldn’t be happier to have been the one to capture these memories. The children are adorable, kind, and loving the way that you just love to be around them—I even let them take pictures of me! Haha.
In between hugs and runs towards the camera, I was able to capture the most candid detail about them: their absolute love for each other. I know that when they look back at these photos years later, they will remember how much fun we had and how incredible their bond was.
In this blog post, we'll take you behind the scenes of a family beach photo session, sharing insights into the preparation, the process, and the unforgettable moments that make these sessions so special.
Setting the Stage for the Family Photo Session by a Virginia Family Photographer
Location and Timing
The first step in planning a successful family beach photo session in Hampton, VA, is choosing the perfect location and timing. The beaches in Hampton offer picturesque views with their sandy shores and calm waters. Early morning or late afternoon sessions are ideal to take advantage of the soft, golden light, which adds a magical touch to the photos.
Preparation
Before the session, I consult with the family to discuss their vision, wardrobe choices, and any specific shots they have in mind. Coordinating outfits in complementary colors, but avoiding overly matchy-matchy looks, helps create a cohesive and visually pleasing final result. I also recommend bringing along a few props, such as a favorite family blanket or beach toys, to add a personal touch to the photos.
The Day of the Session
Setting Up: Upon arrival, I scout the beach for the best spots to capture the family’s dynamic. I look for interesting backdrops like sand dunes, rocky areas, and water reflections. Setting up involves ensuring that the lighting is just right and that the chosen spots offer both variety and interest for the shoot.
Candid Moments: One of the joys of a family beach photo session is capturing candid moments. I encourage families to interact naturally, whether it's walking along the shore, playing in the sand, or sharing a laugh. These genuine interactions often lead to the most heartwarming and memorable photos.
Capturing the Shots
Posed and Unposed: While candid shots are essential, I also guide families through a few posed setups. This might include sitting together on a blanket, standing in a line holding hands, or even a fun group jump. These posed shots provide a nice balance and ensure a variety of images for the family to choose from.
Details and Expressions: Focusing on the little details and expressions is key. I capture close-ups of hands holding seashells, children’s joyful faces as they splash in the water, and tender moments between parents and their kids. These detailed shots add depth to the collection and tell a more complete story of the family’s day at the beach.
The Final Touch
Editing and Delivery: After the session, the editing process begins. I enhance the natural beauty of the photos by adjusting the lighting, contrast, and colors, while maintaining the authenticity of the moments captured. The final collection is delivered through a private online gallery, allowing the family to view, share, and download their favorite images.
